HISTORY
CAN was established in 2002 to help disabled and/or disadvantaged citizens of Craigmillar to remove barriers and maximise their income and independence. We provide a unique and comprehensive welfare service, including advice and advocacy for our members, their carers, their families and all residents primarily of the now greater Portobello and Craigmillar Ward. CAN have grown from 5 initial members to 750 + and the membership continues to increase daily. It has only been possible to sustain this exponential growth through sustainable and collaborative partnership working.
The CAN office is based on Niddrie Mains Road, but our staff are more than happy
to make home visits for those members unable to visit in person.
Strategic Aims
Our main strategic aims are:- To provide a fully comprehensive information, advice and welfare service
- To improve Employment Opportunities through volunteering and supported employment experiences
- To address Health Inequalities by providing opportunities through healthly choices
- To improve by Early Intervention the life chances for childres, young people and families at risk
- To empower our membership to move on from lives impaired by poverty disability and disadvantage
